Major Auto Accident Reported

One driver thought he could avoid a checkpoint by speeding away from it in Rockingham County. What happened instead was a single-car accident that took the lives of two and injured another one.

According to police, several officers witnessed the sports car make a U-turn to avoid the checkpoint and speed away. They located the vehicle shortly after, overturned in the front yard of a residential property. Although the officers were able to extinguish the engine fire quickly, they were unable to resuscitate the driver and one passenger, who were both found dead on the scene.

The third passenger was taken by helicopter to a local hospital in unknown condition. At this time, the officers are blaming excessive speeds for the car accident, although the incident is still under investigation. It is uncertain whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident. The victims were a 41-year-old male and a 24-year-old female.
